LEGO Portal of Atlantis (8078)
Atlantis lego 8078 - The portal to the lost city of Atlantis has finally been found! But getting through it will be the divers' greatest challenge yet. They must first get past hidden traps, shark guardian statues that come alive, Squid and Shark Warriors and the Portal Emperor before unlocking the portal with the five Atlantis treasure keys! Will they prevail?
My kids loved itEveryone that has a child knows you can't go wrong with Lego's, they're simple enough for any kid to start building straight out of the box, and complicated enough to look for the instruction manual if you're trying to build exactly what you see on the box.Portal of Atlantis is, like any other Lego set, the best of both worlds, such a great theme begs to be built the way it was intended, I always challenge my kids to build the set and then modify it by adding parts and pieces of other Lego sets. It's always good family fun when we can all get together and "remodel" Lego sets, a definitely recommend that you tried that with your kids if you happen to have spare Lego parts from incomplete sets he he. Overall, as all other Lego products, quality is great, very entertaining, you can spend hours building with this set alone. Such a great addition to the Lego family whether you combine it with others or not, it's just a great package and well worth the price. Great for any child that likes using their imagination to create they're own adventures. Highly recommend it! Source: Amazon.com Atlantis lego 8078 Review |

Despite variation in the design and purpose of individual pieces over the years, each remains compatible in some way with existing pieces. Broad LEGO appeal for both kids and grownups!
By Doc Occula
Overall Building: Overall, the set is very nice. It's just over a thousand pieces (1,007) and has some complex aspects to what it does, yet the construction is relatively simple, so even young children can build it. I worked on the set with a precocious six-year-old (I can say that, because he's not my son), and he didn't have any problems with any sections of the set, including the moving sections. And it's the moving sections that make this set so great. The snake-like mouth that makes the entry gate has some neat articulation, so that when you lift the top jaw up, the two lower jaws pull apart, opening up the gate. And the portal at the top, when you twist a jeweled key, makes the interior portal sections open and close. The moving parts aren't overly complicated, but they have a pretty big impact on the model, especially the opening jaws, which everyone "ohs" and "ahs" over when they see it. I think it's a really good introduction to building more complicated behaviors for younger kids.
The architecture of the snake-jaws-gate and the portal are moderately complicated, while the left- and right-wings of the structure are more simplistic, so if you were working with different-age children, the older one could build the central structure and the younger one could work on the sides. The colors are nice - deeper reds matched with dark greys and blacks, and the jewel-colors of the portal and some of the small accessories highlighting the overall model.
I personally love the more detailed sets (like the Green Grocer and Fire Brigade), but that's as an adult (and those sets are recommended for 16+). I'd give it 4.5 stars for myself, but for the recommended age group, I definitely think it's 5 stars.
Minifigures: The set comes with seven minifigures - three divers, one Shark Warrior, one Squid Warrior, one Portal Emperor, and a skeleton. The Squid Warrior, in particular, is a really neat and unique figure, one that I'm looking forward to using in future horror and fantasy sets that I put together. The Shark Warrior and Portal Emperor are also interesting, and I don't think the Portal Emperor is available anywhere else. The divers are nice models, with double-sided heads so that you can vary their expressions.
Usefulness of Pieces for My-Own-Constructions (MOCs): If you've got a basic collection that you're working with, I think this could be a good model to add to your collection of pieces. First, there are a lot of unique pieces - the portal sections, the nice gold gates, lots of minifigures, and pretty unusual accessories (tridents, spearguns, etc.). Second, the deep-red-colored and gold bricks are unusual; I really like their shades and look forward to using them in future creations. This isn't necessarily the best "first purchase" if you're wanting to start doing crazy creations, but if you've got a good basic set and you want to add some unique colors and flair to your collection, this set is definitely worth picking up.

Legos' Latest is the Greatest!
By Jean Yates
When we opened up this Lego set our reaction was, "it is amazing"! As one of the kids said, it's "AWESOME!" It took us a couple of days to put it together, because it is very complex (there was no way our younger kids were going to be able to do it, but it says it is for 8 year olds anyway), but the thing really is incredible. It comes with six dudes (three humans in deep-sea scuba type equipment with spearguns, and three "creatures of the deep" type dudes -- a guy with a shark head, a guy with a golden helmet, and a really cool squid-guy with tentacle legs). Also included are two giant sharks that you build from Legos.
The set in itself is also great. There are pieces that are set up so that you can make them move. It's hard to describe without a visual, but as an example, there is a little wheel. If you turn it, it makes a giant portal-like thing spin open, revealing the treasure chest behind it. Very cool. The kids love it.
All in all, it is really fun to put together (for people old enough to do it). The only downside is that many pieces feel sort of specialized -- as if they could only be used for this set, in the particular way that the instructions tell you to use it. That cuts against one of the best things about Legos - that you can put them together any way that you want and come up with your own creations. And man, if we ever take this apart, I doubt I'd be able to put it together again! The pieces were pre-sorted in 9 different bags, so that you only had to deal with putting the pieces together one bag at a time. Without that pre-sorting, it'd be very hard to do.
Keep that in mind, but it is a FANTASTIC set anyway!

Great construction toy for a kid
By Dorothy Herman
My 7 year old grandson was totally enthralled by his Lego Atlantis Portal. He worked on it every spare minute he had until it was finished. Following the directions was a great learning experience. Once it was finished he loved all the moving parts and the figures that came with it. The only negative is that once it is built it pretty much becomes a "model" and doesn't get played with but rather set out for display.
